Greene County, TN

Greene County, Tennessee, named for Major Nathaniel Greene of Revolutionary War fame, is a quaint, rural area found in the northeast portion of the state.  Boasting a rich, historical past and present-day small town serenity, Greene County’s natural beauty brings in a strong tourist trade.  Greene County covers 622 square miles, some of which is the breathtaking Cherokee National Forest. The 2000 Census recorded the population as 62,909.  The county seat is Greeneville, population 15,198.

If you're heading to court in Greene County, you should know that Tennessee's legal system includes four trial courts: the Circuit Courts, which, as courts of general jurisdiction handle civil and criminal matters and hear appeals from the courts with limited jurisdiction; the Chancery Courts, which exclusively hear civil cases and generally handle cases that fall outside the traditional common-law actions; the Criminal Courts, located in 13 of TN’s 31 judicial districts, which serve as relief for heavy caseloads in other courts, hearing criminal cases and misdemeanor appeals from the lower courts; and the Probate Court, which hears individual estate cases but only operates in a few districts.  Tennessee Rules of Civil Procedure are readily available to the public.

If you have a personal injury case in Tennessee, your claim will be heard in civil court. This Self-Help section of the TN Courts website will tell you what to expect in court.  Once you’ve gone through a trial, you may have the right to appeal your personal injury case to the state’s Appeals Court or the Supreme Court.  The Tennessee Court of Appeals and the Tennessee Supreme Court both convene in the cities of Jackson, Knoxville and Nashville, as required by the Tennessee State Constitution.

Greene County consists of three towns, one city and several unincorporated communities.  Tusculum, with a population of almost 2,100, is home to Tusculum College, the oldest college in Tennessee Baileyton, population 505, and Mosheim, population 1,830, along with Greenville, complete the towns.  Mosheim originated as Blue Springs and is the site of the major Civil War battle, the nine-hour Battle of Blue Springs.  Modern-day re-enactors flock here each October, and the hillsides come alive with the roar of antique guns and their billowing clouds of smoke.

Greene County’s unincorporated communities include Mohawk, Afton, Chuckey (which boasts five golf courses) and Limestone, birthplace of legendary Davy Crockett.  Limestone honors its native son each year during Crockett Days Celebration.  Also found here is the David Crockett State Park.

Greenville, TN is Greene County’s only large community.  In 2005, Site Selection Magazine ranked Greeneville as the 11th best micropolitan for new and expanding industry.  Greeneville received recognition in publications such as Boomtown USA, Top Mountain Town Guidebook, 100 Best Small Towns and America's Most Charming Towns and Villages.  Even Greenville’s school system receives praise, as one of only 320 schools nationwide to achieve the No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon status.  Greenville contains a wealth of historic sites and family-friendly attractions.

Greene County, Tennessee presents rural living at its finest.  With a backdrop of towering mountains, the pastoral scenes and wilderness regions soothe the eyes and calm the heart.
