Tennessee Driver’s License Point System

All Tennessee drivers with a valid driver’s license must adhere to the Tennessee point system used to ensure at-risk drivers are closely monitored. Under the point system, points are added to your driving record for convictions of moving violations and accidents. The goal of the system is “to impress upon drivers the importance of complying with traffic laws and regulations.”

The number of points on Tennessee drivers’ records is monitored by the Driver Improvement Section of the Tennessee Department of Safety. If you accumulate 12 or more points within a year, you are notified that your license may be suspended. Drivers with six to 11 points are sent an advisory letter to let them know they are approaching 12 points and risk losing their license upon another violation.

There are steps drivers can take to prevent the suspension of their license – with some exceptions. Anyone with 12 points can request a hearing to determine what method or action is necessary to correct and improve poor driving habits. The options include driving courses, re-examinations, placing necessary restrictions on the licensee and probation. If those attempts to improve a driving record are unsuccessful, the person’s driving privileges will be suspended.

The number of points added to your driving record depends on the conviction. There are different point values assigned to drivers of commercial vehicles.

Partial List Of Point Accumulation For Non-Commercial Vehicles:

Violation # Points
Speeding 16 through 25 mph in excess of speed zone 4
Speeding 26 through 35 mph in excess of speed zone 5
Reckless Driving 6
Signs and control devices – Failing to obey traffic instructions 4
Reckless endangerment by vehicle, misdemeanor 8
Contributing to an accident resulting in bodily injury 4
Contributing to an accident resulting in another’s death 8

As you accumulate points, you risk suspension of your driver’s license. If you accumulate a total of 6 points within 12 months, the department will send you a point accumulation advisory. If you accumulate 12 or more points in 12 months, your driving privilege may be suspended.

At the end of your driving suspension you will need to apply for reinstatement of your license as well as pay a reinstatement fee. The fees can be excessive, but the state has an installment plan option if needed to pay any fees over $200.
